Judge
Margaret N. Upchurch was born on May 21, 1944 in Saluda
County, South Carolina. She is the daughter of the
late Joseph Coleman Nicholson and Perrine Grant Nicholson.
Her father was a farmer and her mother was a homemaker
and clerk. She has one sister, Linda Gail N. Wise.
Judge
Upchurch attended Hollywood Grammar School and graduated
from Hollywood High School in 1961. In 1962 she graduated
from Columbia Commercial College.
After
graduation from High School she worked at Monsanto
in Greenwood, South Carolina from 1964 to 1968. Saluda
County employed her in 1978 as clerk to Probate Court
and Clerk of Court. In 1980 she was hired full-time
as clerk in the Saluda County Probate Court working
under the former Judge Daisy P. Porter and was appointed
as the Deputy Judge of Probate in 1987. She was appointed
as Judge of Probate in 1998 by Governor David M. Beasley
to fill the un-expired term of Judge Randy Mitchell.
She was elected to office in November of 2000, and
took office in January 2001.
Judge
Upchurch is married to David M. Upchurch. They have
two children, David Wayne and Joseph Craig Upchurch.
She also has three grandchildren.
She
is an active member of New Horizon Baptist Fellowship,
serving as the church pianist, and member of the New
Horizon Daughters of Christ. She is also a member
of the South Carolina Association of Probate Judges.
Her
hobbies include reading, gardening and shopping.
